A Lifetime of Music, a Few Unexpected Key Changes, and One Heck of a Story<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some musicians find music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Chip McCain, music found him \u2014 and apparently had no intention of letting him go.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the road has included touring bands, Nashville recording studios, packed performance schedules, radio, computers, entrepreneurship, community service, and more than a few unexpected detours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through all of it, one thing has never really changed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chip loves entertaining people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as anybody who has spent much time in the music business knows, the best stories usually aren’t the ones that follow the chart exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes there are key changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes somebody misses the cue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes the whole thing turns into a pretty good song anyway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Early Years: Finding the Beat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chip spent his early childhood in Tampa, Florida. At the age of nine, a shooting accident dramatically changed the course of his life, eventually leaving him totally blind by fourteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That changed a lot of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It did not<\/strong> change where he was headed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After attending the Alabama School for the Blind in Talladega for a year, Chip was mainstreamed into the public school system in Birmingham. He later attended high school in Springville, Alabama, along with the Alabama School of Fine Arts<\/strong> in Birmingham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere in the middle of all that, music entered the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then it refused to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chip’s musical journey began in elementary school band, where several outstanding teachers recognized his ability and encouraged him to keep developing it. What started as an interest quickly became something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By thirteen, Chip was already working with local dance bands as a drummer and occasional organist<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most thirteen-year-olds were still trying to figure out what they wanted to do when they grew up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chip was already trying to figure out where the next gig was.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

From Behind the Drums to Behind the Keys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At seventeen, while studying Piano Technology at the E. H. Gentry Technical Facility in Talladega<\/strong>, Chip was offered a job as a sound and lighting technician for the local country act The Wayne Hand Band<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was good experience. He learned more about sound, production, equipment, and everything that happens behind the scenes to make a show work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was only one problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He belonged on the other side of the PA.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before long, Chip was back onstage, this time behind the keyboards with the popular regional dance band Charter Oak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in 1984, the road came calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chip joined a Midwestern touring band and spent the next several years traveling, performing, and sharpening his skills as a keyboard player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nightclubs. Dance halls. Long drives. Late nights. Load-ins. Load-outs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the kind of real-world musical education that only happens when you’re doing it night after night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came Nashville.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Nashville: Studios, Stages & Life in the Music Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1987, Chip moved to Nashville, Tennessee<\/strong>, to play keyboards for the up-and-coming recording act Dixie Grey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What followed was nearly a decade immersed in one of the toughest and most competitive music scenes in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chip worked as a session musician in Nashville demo studios, performed on recording projects, and wrote and performed radio and television jingles<\/strong> for a studio associated with the Westwood One Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also played piano for a Delta Blues act at Opryland<\/strong> and spent time on the road touring with established recording artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the kind of musical education you simply can’t get from a textbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studios. Stages. Rehearsals. Sessions. Road trips. Late-night gigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And probably enough coffee to keep a small truck stop in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those years sharpened Chip’s musicianship, strengthened his stage instincts, and taught him something just as important as knowing the notes: how to adapt, how to listen, and how to deliver when people are counting on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nashville has a way of letting you know pretty quickly whether you can hang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chip hung around for nine years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Back to Birmingham \u2014 and Going Solo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1996, Chip returned to Birmingham and once again began performing with local bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But by then, the music business was changing. Maintaining a full-time working band was becoming more difficult, and Chip saw where things were headed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So he made another adjustment and began developing himself as a solo entertainer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That turned out to be a pretty smart move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the height of his schedule, Chip was performing as many as seven nights a week \u2014 and occasionally as many as eleven shows in a single week.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s not a typo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleven.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently sleep was considered optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During that period, Chip performed at some of Birmingham’s best-known venues and built a reputation as one of the area’s hardest-working and most frequently requested entertainers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going solo also gave him something a traditional band couldn’t always offer: the freedom to move easily between styles, venues, and audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One night might call for laid-back dinner music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another might need classic rock, country, dance tunes, or a room full of people singing along to something everybody knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And occasionally the crowd has ideas of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s where experience matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chip’s philosophy has always been pretty simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read the room. Play the right song. Keep people entertained. Make sure everybody has a good time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Because a performer should be paying attention to the people in front of him \u2014 not just working his way down a playlist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

There’s More to the Story Than Music<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Music may have always been the soundtrack, but Chip has never been particularly interested in playing only one note in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At sixteen, he earned his Professional Radio Announcer’s License from the Federal Communications Commission<\/strong>, adding broadcasting to an already growing list of interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He studied Piano Technology at E. H. Gentry Technical Facility and later pursued Computer Science coursework at Bessemer State Technical College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
